University Charging Me 10k After Dropping Years Ago

Card image cap

Location: Indiana, USA. Hello, I am from Indianapolis, In, USA, and I am trying to figure out what to do here. I’m sorry if I seem dumb or clueless writing this, I’m just kind of at a loss and not sure if I need to hire a lawyer or not. I attended university for less than a semester in 2021 before having to file a medical withdrawal due to conditions that would prohibit me from learning properly. Medical paperwork was filled out by medical professionals and submitted to the university asap. The paperwork was also put together by the university, I wanted to add that in. A few months later, I started getting letters stating that I needed to pay them well over 10k for the time I was there. I called the university, and they stated that they “lost the paperwork”. I sent another copy, which they also stated they lost. I asked to speak to someone in that department and they left me on hold for over an hour, and told me they would call me back, and never did. I’m just kind of at a loss. If I’m in the wrong I will try to pay it off over time, but I don’t just have 10k lying around. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’ve never been in any legal trouble and I don’t want to start with this.
