Unmanned Vehicle Hit Our Car

Card image cap

Location: Massachusetts

My mother (driver) and I were at a stop sign at a right only T intersection (we were on the side road attempting to turn on to the main road; both are 2-way roads, but you can only turn right onto the main road). Diagonally across the way was an NA automotive maintenance chain center (keeping vague on purpose). We saw a vehicle coming out of the chain that was moving a bit weird and the driver side door was open. My mother laid on her horn, but there was no reaction. We realized there was no one in the vehicle.

My mother tried to maneuver out of the way, but was unable to fully due to other vehicles on the road. The unmanned car hit the rear passenger tire head on and messed it up. So far, it’s been about $1,000 of damage. It is still messed up, and we are bringing it back to the garage it was worked on.

The owner of the car told police that he was just donated the vehicle, it was uninsured and the plates didn’t match; however, he had insurance and he provided those details to the officer. He was not cited. We’ve called the provider, and they have no record of him. We did get his phone number on scene, and he is saying he has no responsibility per his insurance, but is refusing to confirm his insurance company with us.

We’ve also called the automotive chain, and they are claiming no responsibility as the “owner did not inform them the e-brake did not work.”

Where do we go from here?
