Utility Shut-off Mistake
First, I'd like to point out that I am 100% at fault for not ensuring that my service was shut off, I am just seeing what, if any, legal recourse I may have.
Location: Kansas
Back in May of 2021 I left a house I was renting where I was responsible for all utilities. In my switch to my new apartment, I thought I had switched addresses for my gas service. I was wrong, and the place I have been living at since May of 2021 doesn't use gas. Since the bill was on auto-pay, I didn't think twice about it. Bill got paid, I went about my day.
Now, in transitioning to my next apartment that DOES have gas, I did the same thing I thought I had in 2021 and switched to my new address. This is when I realized I had been paying the bill for my old address to the tune of $3,773.
Unfortunately I don't have access to my old lease - I have a new email and lost all docs saved in my old email and computer.
Is there anything I can do to have my old landlord and/or the tenants who have been benefiting from my gas payments pay me back?
I'm almost certain this is just one of those very expensive lessons one learns in life and I am SOL, but it's worth a shot.
