Victim Of Moving Scam And No Help Offered By Police

Location: Mass, USA
Hello,

Long story short, I have been the victim of a stereotypical moving scam. For those not familiar with this type of scam look up the typical red flags of a moving scam, and I hit all of them. Unfortunately I had no idea what was going on at the time and am now out thousands of dollars.

Backstory (skip to main point if you want):

I was doing an interstate move across the country on short notice. I contacted a moving broker who gave me a very low price. I accepted and paid a deposit.

On move in day three guys showed up, the driver being the only one who spoke any English. They loaded all of my stuff into the back of the moving van, and then demanded I pay them thousands more in expenses. This is a textbook hostage load scam.

I am now living in the new state and they are saying they will send my stuff next week. Having read up on the scam, the next step is they will show up and demand thousands more to unload my goods, under the threat of taking it away if I don’t.

I have so far:
Filed a police report on the jurisdiction where this happened.
Filed one in my new jurisdiction explaining to them what is going to happen.
Filed a report to the FBI
Filed a report to the FCMSA

Each department has basically said this is civil and there is nothing they can do. Is this correct? Am I expected to just allow myself to be extorted under threat of losing all of my things when this is a well known federal crime?

No one will help, and I don’t know a single person in my new area who could even be here to offer support.

They have my baby’s stuff.
They have my wife’s wedding dress.

Is there really nothing than can be done when they show up to prevent this from happening? It’s like watching a train coming at me in slow motion.

Any advice at all would be appreciated.
