Wa/id - Adult Adoption Filing Location Question
Location: Me: Washington state My stepmom: Idaho
I'm 23 and planning an adult adoption so my stepmom can adopt me, and I can take her last name before getting married later this year since I want to A) legally change my first and middle name anyway, B) I want her last name when I get married and C) I don't want any ties to my birth mother on my marriage certificate since your current legal name goes on that when you file for it and fill it out.
I live in Washington, my stepmom lives in Idaho and I was also born in Idaho if that makes a difference.
I've tried finding the answer online, but I keep getting mixed answers about where the adoption papers should be filed. Do adult adoptions usually get filed in the state where the adoptee lives, or where the adoptive parent lives?
Also, since I'm an adult, does my birth mother have any ability to object or get notified about this process happening since she is the only one on my current birth certificate?
I'm trying to understand the process before paying filing fees or hiring a lawyer if one isn't required.
