Walking My Dog In A Nearby Cemetery?
Location: upstate New York
Was walking my dog this morning and had passerby confront me pretty aggressively about where I was walking her. We don't really live in a neighborhood, just a street with a few houses on it near a small downtown area (small town but has a few restaurants, shops, etc downtown).
We live near a small, public access, non-gated cemetery, and I like to walk her around it. We would never disturb anyone coming there to grieve and would skip that portion if we ever saw anyone there for that purpose, but I've never seen anyone except others walking their dogs in there. Most graves are from 1850-1950, so I doubt there are many relatives still visiting. She's always on a leash, walks in a tight heel, and I would ALWAYS pick up after her if she were to go to the bathroom there, which she doesn't since she goes before then.
Anyway, today, older man walking by yells at me that he's going to call the police on me if I don't stop walking the dog there. As far as any posted signage, there's nothing saying dogs can't come into the cemetery, and like I said I would never interrupt or even be present if someone was there to visit a relative's grave.
I'm assuming if he called the police, there's not much that would happen, but am I missing something? I'm new to the state, so maybe there are laws I don't know?
