Ex Refusing To Get His Things From My House

Location: Virginia

My ex boyfriend finally moved out after an incident where his abusive behavior towards me escalated. I am okay and he did not hurt me past a deep bruise and instilling fear in me. He knew a line was crossed and agreed to finally move out (2 weeks past the eviction date on the notice I gave him in May). I have refused to be around him since the incident but have granted him access to the house several times for him to move out.

Each time he promises to get all of his belongings but there are still many things at my house (computer, some clothes, kitchenware etc). My house is under contract and we are set to close at the end of this month. It isn’t as though I am staying here and being difficult, I have to be out in two weeks myself. I think he is intentionally leaving items here knowing I could face legal ramifications if I get rid of them on my own (he has threatened to sue me if I toss them) as one final effort to maintain some control. I’ve begged him to just get them but every time he shows up he takes the bare minimum and leaves.

I’m at a loss for what to do short of moving his stuff with me. I think he may believe this would secure an invitation to my new house which is not an option. He will not know where I live. He has some items in my storage unit as well and I fear he will do the same thing to force me to keep my unit longer than necessary. I don’t want to be sued over something so silly but it feels so unfair I have to move his belongings with me despite begging him to get them and giving him access to my home over and over. He has left messes each time, covered my pet camera and called me harassing me the whole time he is in my home. I just want this behind me and to never have to speak to him again. Is there any legal recourse to force him to get his things before my close date? Or to legally dispose of them?
