Write-ups For Using Sick Time That We’ve Earned?
Hi, Location: Illinois at a Veterans Affairs hospital. Since a new director of nursing came on, our manager said she has to write us up if we have fewer than 40 sick hours in our bank in a quarter. I’ve been working almost 2.5 years and have taken off for things like pets and an uncle dying, as well as mental health days and of course being sick. Though since this policy has started I haven’t taken any more mental health days. But I have been sick with fever where I had to call off an entire week which brought me down to like 12 hours. Now I’m up to about 36 and wouldn’t you know it I’m sick with fevers again as I’m scheduled for 3 12 hour shifts starting today.
All this doesn’t really seem right since I’ve earned those hours and am using them legitimately now. Do they want me to come in sick and infect other staff and patients? So is this legal? If I were to apply for a new job elsewhere can they say to my potential new employers that I have a problem with calling in based on these write-ups? Thanks!!
