The study analyzed thousands of AI-generated responses tied to high-intent consumer prompts involving:

Among the brands most consistently surfaced across AI-generated recommendations:

• Healthy Paws
• Nationwide Pet Insurance
• Nutramax Laboratories
• Zesty Paws

The report found that AI engines consistently favored brands with:

• strong veterinary authority
• high Reddit and community-discussion density
• extensive review ecosystems
• educational content depth
• third-party editorial validation
• strong retailer presence
• clear entity recognition across the web

According to the report, several digitally native challenger brands significantly outperformed their overall market size because AI systems repeatedly treated them as more trusted recommendation sources.

“The pet industry is becoming one of the clearest examples of AI-mediated commerce,” said Ronn Torossian. “Consumers are increasingly asking AI engines directly which food brands are healthiest, which supplements veterinarians trust, which insurance providers are worth buying, and where they should spend money on their pets. The brands AI engines repeatedly recommend are gaining a major structural advantage.”

The study found that traditional advertising scale alone did not predict AI visibility dominance.
“One of the most important findings is that AI systems reward authority, trust, and educational depth far more than raw advertising spend,” Torossian added. “Brands with strong veterinarian credibility, educational ecosystems, Reddit discussion density, and third-party validation consistently outperformed brands relying primarily on paid visibility.”

The report also argues that AI engines are beginning to compress consumer choice by repeatedly citing a smaller group of trusted brands across recommendation-style prompts.
According to 5W, this creates a new competitive environment where Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), AI citation authority, and AI trust signals become increasingly important growth drivers.

“The next era of consumer brand competition will be heavily influenced by AI recommendation systems,” said Torossian. “Visibility inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews is becoming a real business advantage.”
