NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo provided an update about Trent Williams contract and whether the San Francisco 49ers have made any progress within the past week:

From my understanding, there’s been no progress from the past week when the 49ers talked about the optimism that they would get a new deal with Williams to remain with the 49ers heading into this upcoming season. So there’s still work that needs to be done there in the next couple of days to make sure that Williams does not hit the market.

If he does, there’s going to be interest. And my understanding is that he still feels like he’s got at least two or three good years left in that body. He’s certainly playing like it.

Williams was the big news story last week. Because there are no other options currently on the roster, it makes the most sense for the 49ers to “cave” and give Williams the deal he’s seeking. The last thing the team wants is to head into free agency without their captain, leader, and best player at a premium position.

The good news is the NFL moves quickly, and things could turn in a hurry. San Francisco shouldn’t have a problem finding a way to move money around or give Williams his guarantees after the recent news of the salary cap rising.

The free agent pool doesn’t exactly make you feel confident if Williams were to walk in free agency. Rasheed Walker, Braxton Jones–who didn’t play after seven games due to a knee injury–are the top two options. If you’re going to pay somebody, paying the established Hall of Famer in your locker room feels like the wise way to go.
