Cowboys Release Qb Joe Milton, Keep Sam Howell To Backup Dak Prescott This Season

Joe Milton's time in Dallas is over.

The Cowboys released the backup quarterback on Monday, ending his short tenure with the franchise. In a corresponding move, running back Emari Demercado was claimed by the Cowboys off waivers from Kansas City.

The New England Patriots selected Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Tennessee. He spent his rookie season there, but only appeared in one game, and then landed in Dallas the following offseason.

In his one year backing up Dak Prescott with the Cowboys, Milton appeared in four games. He threw for 183 yards and a touchdown, with two interceptions, while completing 15 of his 24 attempts.

The Cowboys kept Milton and Howell on their 53-man roster on Sunday, along with Prescott. With Milton now gone, Howell will presumably be the backup for the Cowboys to start the season. The former North Carolina quarterback spent last season with the Seattle Seahawks, but was most recently a starter during the 2023 campaign with the Washington Commanders.

Prescott threw for 4,552 yards with 30 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season, his 10th with the Cowboys. They went 7-9-1 and missed the playoffs for a second straight campaign.

The Cowboys will open the season against the New York Giants on Sept. 13.
