Jaylen Waddle Gives The Broncos The Elite Playmaker That They Have Been Lacking

The Denver Broncos entered free agency with some high expectations from their fans. The team made it to the AFC Championship Game; they were the number one seed, won the AFC West, and were likely a Bo Nix broken ankle away from advancing to the Super Bowl. So many fans and media anticipated the Broncos to go big in free agency and take advantage of their current Super Bowl window. However, they instead decided to run it back and re-sign many of their own free agents and passed on making any outside additions.

Then it happened.

On an early morning in Mid-March, the news broke that the Denver Broncos were trading with the Miami Dolphins for explosive wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. The full trade details have the Broncos getting Waddle and a 2026 4th round pick, while the Dolphins get the Broncos 2026 1st round pick as well as their 3rd and 4th round picks in 2026 as well.

This blockbuster trade quieted the noise a bit and reignited the hype in Broncos Country as the Broncos add an explosive playmaking weapon to their offense. This is something the team has desperately been lacking, and with quarterback Bo Nix proving he is a top franchise quarterback, the team went out and got him a top playmaker to help this offense take that next step this offseason.

Waddle joins a now-loaded Denver Broncos wide receiver room that includes longtime Broncos veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton and a group of talented young wide receivers that includes Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims Jr. and Pat Bryant. This talented and deep group should prove to be a strength for the Broncos this upcoming season with Jaylen Waddle leading the way.

Jaylen Waddle’s 2026 outlook with the Denver Broncos

He is expected to be the Broncos’ number one wide receiver, their top playmaker, and someone they feature in their offense each and every week. He will pair with veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton to give the Broncos a talented top two wide receivers, while Pat Bryant, Marvin Mims, and Troy Franklin

Head Coach Sean Payton told reporters earlier this offseason that they have a clear vision and plan for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and that he will play inside and out for the Broncos this upcoming season.

“Absolutely. You could start slot to outside, or go outside to slot, just pick. There’s a crystal-clear vision prior to the trade as to, ‘All right, this is what we see, this is where he plays and these are the things that we feel like he’s exceptional at.’ Then, ‘Let’s apply them into what we’re doing.’”

He added that Waddle’s initial home will be outside, but that “there may be some packages where we have some flex” and that he’s doing too well outside to move him from there.

Waddle’s impact will be felt throughout the offense. His presence will open things up for Courtland Sutton, who may not see a team’s top corner every snap and take attention off Mims, Franklin, and/or Bryant and open up things for them.

Payton told reporters they have depth in their wide receiver room and it is their job to find the strengths of those players and take advantage of them.

“There’s depth at that room. There are things that the guys do very well. Our job is to find those strengths and put them in those positions. He has been a great addition, and we’re just getting started.”

What will stand out the most with Waddle is his speed and ability to separate and get open quickly. The Broncos haven’t had a player with that sort of speed AND route running ability in a longtime and I believe Waddle is going to explode for a huge season in 2026. We saw former Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas be heavily targeted in the passing game under Payton, and I could see a similar type of production from Waddle this season.

If the Broncos want their offense to take that next step, they need Waddle to have a big breakout first season with the team, and I believe he can and will do that.

Final Thoughts

Man, I am excited.

Waddle is the type of playmaker I wanted the Broncos to add for years now. His speed and playmaking ability are elite, and I believe he is going to thrive under Sean Payton/Davis Webb and quarterback Bo Nix.

His impact on the team will be felt throughout the offense as he will open up things for everyone else. Sutton won’t see a team’s top corner or double coverage; Mims/Franklin/Bryant will see a team’s third or fourth best corner, and the tight ends should see more room in the middle of the field. Also, defenses will not be able to load the box to stop the Broncos’ run game due to Waddle’s speed, so that could open things up on the ground as well.

Clearly, I have high hopes for Waddle this upcoming season and cannot wait to see him torch the Chiefs’ secondary in Week One and continue that throughout the 2026 season, postseason, and all the way to the Super Bowl.
