Ravens Sign Ufl Qb Austin Reed In Wake Of Injuries To Lamar Jackson, Tyler Huntley

The Baltimore Ravens are in need of at least one more quarterback and now have one on their practice squad.

On Monday, they signed Austin Reed to their practice squad. Baltimore is in desperate need of quarterback help on the heels of multiple injuries in Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The Ravens are facing a short week with a Thursday night game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Who will play QB for Ravens in Week 9?

All-Pro starter Lamar Jackson left Sunday's game with a thumb injury that will require surgery and a stint on injured reserve. It's not yet clear if the injury is season-ending. He sustained his injury on Baltimore's first offensive play.

Backup Tyler Huntley suffered a toe injury in the same game that sidelined him before halftime. His prognosis was not yet clear as of Monday afternoon.

Third-string emergency quarterback Joe Fagnano finished the 36-10 loss for the Ravens. He completed 10-of-21 passes for 91 yards with an interception and no touchdowns in his NFL debut. As of Monday, he's the top healthy option on Baltimore's depth chart and projects to start against Jacksonville.

Who is Austin Reed?

Reed, 26, has never thrown an NFL pass. He played Division II football at West Florida, then played two seasons at Western Kentucky in 2022 and 2023. He led the FBS with 4,746 passing yards in 2022.

Reed played in the 2024 preseason with the Chicago Bears before signing with their practice squad. He remained with the team through 2025 offseason workouts and training camp, when he worked in offensive coordinator Declan Doyle's system. Doyle is now the offensive coordinator for the Ravens.

Reed has since played for the Dallas Renegades in the United Football League. He spent part of training camp this summer with the Ravens and has familiarity with Doyle's offense. He projects as Fagnano's backup for Thursday's game against the Jaguars.
