Opel Grandland Electric Gets 22-kw Onboard Charger, Cutting Charging Times In Half

Opel is making its all-electric SUV lineup more convenient with the introduction of a new 22-kW onboard charger for the Opel Grandland Electric. The upgrade makes the Grandland the first Opel passenger car to offer this charging technology, bringing significantly shorter AC charging times and greater flexibility for owners.

The new 22-kW onboard charger is available across all three electric versions: the standard Grandland Electric, the Grandland Electric Long Range and the dual-motor Grandland Electric AWD.

The upgrade is particularly useful for drivers who regularly charge at home, at work or at public AC charging stations equipped to deliver the higher power output.

The biggest advantage of the new 22-kW onboard charger is the reduction in charging time compared with the standard 11-kW setup.

According to Opel, the higher charging capacity can cut charging times by approximately half when connected to a compatible AC charging station.

For the Grandland Electric and Grandland Electric AWD, both equipped with a 78-kWh battery (73 kWh usable capacity), charging time drops from approximately five hours to just over 2.5 hours.

The Grandland Electric Long Range, which features a larger 100-kWh battery (96.9 kWh usable capacity), also benefits significantly. Its estimated AC charging time falls from around 6.5 hours to approximately 3.25 hours.

Grandland Electric AWD78 kWh (73 kWh)5 hours2.5 hours

These figures make the new charging option particularly attractive for drivers who depend on public AC charging infrastructure or have access to higher-powered charging equipment at home or work.

However, there is an important consideration: achieving the full 22-kW charging rate requires a compatible charging station and sufficient electrical supply. The onboard charger alone cannot guarantee those speeds at every AC charging point.

Opel says the new technology is designed to make everyday electric vehicle ownership more convenient by allowing customers to take better advantage of available charging power.

Beyond its charging improvements, the Opel Grandland Electric continues to offer competitive driving range across its different configurations.

The standard Grandland Electric can travel up to 519 kilometers on a single charge under the WLTP testing cycle. Drivers choosing the Grandland Electric Long Range get an even greater maximum range of up to 691 kilometers.

The SUV also focuses on ride comfort through Opel’s Frequency Selective Damping technology, which comes standard across the all-electric Grandland variants.

The system automatically adjusts the suspension’s damping characteristics depending on road conditions and driving situations.

At higher frequencies, such as when driving over cobblestones or uneven surfaces, the suspension prioritizes comfort by absorbing short impacts. At lower frequencies, it provides firmer responses, improving road contact and supporting more dynamic driving.

The result is a combination of everyday comfort and stable handling, including during braking, cornering and high-speed Autobahn driving.

For buyers looking for more performance and improved traction, Opel also offers the Grandland Electric AWD.

The dual-motor electric SUV produces a combined 239 kW (325 horsepower) and delivers up to 509 Nm of torque.

Its electric all-wheel-drive system is designed to provide additional grip and confidence, particularly when driving on slippery or challenging road surfaces.

Drivers can choose between four driving modes: Normal, Eco, Sport and 4WD.

The 4WD mode keeps both electric motors running continuously, distributing power to all four wheels to maximize traction. Sport mode, meanwhile, sharpens steering and accelerator responses for a more engaging driving experience.

Both modes provide access to the vehicle’s peak power and torque, giving the Grandland Electric AWD a stronger performance focus than the front-wheel-drive versions.

Opel is also working to make electric vehicle ownership more accessible through its Electric All In package.

Customers purchasing a battery-electric Opel model such as the Grandland Electric receive several additional services designed to simplify everyday ownership.

The package includes a Free2Move charging pass, e-routes navigation functions, eight years of mobile charging and breakdown assistance, and a battery warranty.

These services are intended to make the transition to electric mobility easier by addressing some of the practical concerns associated with charging, roadside assistance and battery coverage.
