(brooklyn, Ny) Signed A Lease, Paid The Deposit, And Then The Landlord Flipped A Switch
SO frustrated and upset right now
Location : Brooklyn, NY, USA.
so I signed a lease in Brooklyn. It includes, at my request, a roommate clause. Saying I can get 1 roommate with the landlord's approval of the tenant. It's a 2 bdrm and that would bring my rent down to 1300. I was so excited.
Sign the lease. Meet her in person. Pay the deposit.
And then, after ALL that, including me flying in to.meet her, which she was aware of, she does a, "So by the way, I've been meaning to mention... If you get a roommate, I'm going to have to raise the rent to 3k. Because I have to pay the water bill here."
The rent was 2.6k for a tiny unit in an undesirable neighborhood, no amenities. I was SHOCKED.
She then closed the door and started whispering about how much I would be willing to pay if it's just me in the unit.
I want out. I do not conduct business like this, in this weird under the table kind of way. I don't whisper about money with someone I've never met before. And she waited until the lease was signed and the deposit was paid before acting like that.
I'm going to head to my bank tomorrow to sign an affidavit bout what occurred. Other advice? I'm going to ask for a lease disolvement due to her behavior and a request for the return of security deposit.

Edit to add: and on that note too, due to this interaction, I feel that it's very very obvious she has no intention of ever approving a roommate.
