A Local Shop Did Two Thousand Dollars In Unauthorized Repairs And Is Holding My Car Keys
Location: Pennsylvania.
I dropped my 2017 Accord off at an independent garage yesterday morning for a routine annual state safety and emissions inspection. The sign out front said thirty-nine bucks. I signed a one-page drop-off sheet that only listed the inspection fee.
At 4 PM, the service advisor calls me and says: "Good news, your car passed inspection. Your total is nineteen hundred and forty dollars."
i thought he was reading the wrong invoice.
He told me that my front control arms and rear rotors were supposedly below legal safety limits. Instead of calling to ask for my permission, they just went ahead and replaced everything with aftermarket parts. When I told him I never approved this and only agreed to a forty-dollar inspection, he said Pennsylvania state law forbids them from releasing a car that failed safety standards, so they "had no choice" but to fix it.
Now they are holding my keys and holding my car HOSTAGE on their lot. The manager told me if I don't pay in cash by Friday, he is slapping a mechanic's lien on the title and charging thirty dollars a day in storage fees.
I probably should of asked for a ride back when I dropped it off, but I never imagined a business could just hijack private property like this.
How can a garage legally perform thousands of dollars in unapproved work and then lock your car behind their fence?
