A Tree On My Dead Grandma's Property Killed Someone

Card image cap

Location: PA

My grandmother owned a home in PA, but was renting it out while living with my parents in CA (privately, not through a property managment company). She died two weeks ago.

We just heard today from the tenant that last week a dead tree that was on her property fell and killed someone. He had no idea it happened because he's a CPA and it's tax season so he's barely home right now.

It's a horrible situation all around - I feel so sad for the family of the person who died, and my family is also still grieving our own loss and dealing with all the usual stuff associated with death - the estate, etc.

The insurance on her property is up to date and nobody has contacted us yet about anything aside from the the tenant who texted me this morning because he only just found out about what happened from the neighbor.

Is this just something to let the property insurance handle? Is my grandma's estate likely to be sued? What should we prepare for or expect and how is it affected by the fact that the owner of rhe property had died before the event took place?
