Abandoned Belongings?

Hey everyone, I have a bit of a mundane case… it’s also a bit sad. I also have (recently diagnosed) OCD so I may be over thinking so please bear with me.

TLDR: I’m storing personal items worth over $1k For a friend that ghosted me and I need to get rid of it all. When am I legally allowed to do that?

We are storing some personal belongings in two 77 gallon and three 54 gallon bins that a friend was not financially able to ship when she was moving states. She is a single mom and has experienced homelessness previously. She didn’t want to get rid of the things she’d packed but was unable to transport them or ship them. My husband and I offered to store them for her under the verbal agreement that she would be back mid August with a car to take them home. We have looked into shipping them to her ourselves, but we also don’t have $2,000+ to donate to this situation.

She recently sent me a concerning text that indicated either Suicide or giving up her children. It was vague but definitely seemed like a “goodbye.” I called the police to perform a wellness check and she confirmed she was alive before the call was completed but has since ghosted me.

I do not want to think this way but we do need the space back and will need to move these personal effects eventually… if I don’t hear from her either donate or sell most of it… but keep the irreplaceable things like photos and child art for either her or the kids if I ever hear from them again.

My biggest concern with this is there is well over $1k value of items and I don’t want to be in trouble with her legally… I don’t think she would press charges but you never know. At what point am I able to just get rid of stuff? Is there a time frame?
