Am I Liable For Utility Bill At My Old Apartment?

Card image cap

Location: Pennsylvania

I moved out of an apartment in April 2023. Power bill was in my name. In June 2023, I noticed I had paid for May and June utilities after I moved out accidentally so I turned off autopay and texted the landlord to have him make sure the new tenants switched it over into their name the tenants Venmo’d me to reimburse me for the two months I paid for. I never thought about it again and the account was associated with an email I rarely check.

Fast forward to now, I checked that email and saw an overdue balance statement. I sign into the utility companies website and see that the services to the apartment were still in my name the previous tenant (or tenants) were making payments for the last 3 years but never switched the account over to their name. Evidently, in the last few months no one has been paying the bill so I called the utility company and asked them to shut off service and explained that I haven’t lived there in 3 years but they are saying I am on the hook for the $800 outstanding balance.
