Apartment Asking To Sign Lease Again After I Resigned A Week Ago?

Card image cap

Hello all and thank you in advance!

Location: Nashville, TN.

About a week ago, my bf and I resigned our apartment lease for another 12 month term. The manager of the apartment complex also signed it, and I was emailed a final copy of what we (both parties) has signed.

They are now telling us we need to resign a new lease because they want us to use a service called LeaseLock instead, where we pay a monthly charge instead of a security deposit up front. I have an issue with using this service for a variety of reasons and I may not have chosen to live in the building for another year if I knew about this. They have already refunded the security deposit I paid a year ago (originally, they were supposed to roll over my previous leases security deposit to the new one I just signed) before I agreed to sign anything new.

My assumption is that I can refuse to resign this new lease and keep the standard security deposit arrangement because the “old” lease was already signed by everyone, including the landlord. Isn’t the point of a lease to protect renters from things like this?

If anyone has advice or knowledge on how to proceed, I would really appreciate it!
