Being Sued For A Car Accident From 6 Years Ago

Location: CA As the title says, i recently discovered I’m being sued for $8600 (after interest accrued) for a work vehicle accident I was involved in 2020. It’s my understanding that the company I worked for had their insurance company defend me in court and the case was then closed. Fast forward to last month, I receive a notice in the mail from the DMV stating my license is being suspended due to an unpaid judgement relating to the accident in 2020. After reaching out to the law firm listed on the DMV paperwork, it seems the plaintiff’s insurance company filed a lawsuit against me personally in 2023 and I’m only now finding out about it after summons and other serve papers had been sent to my previous address. I have the option to start a payment plan to reinstate my license and start paying the full judgement back or pay a $6000 lump sum to settle the judgement. The plaintiff’s attorney advised I reach out to my own insurance company and notify them of the situation as they’d rather go after my insurance rather than me personally. The insurance company I had at the time has not been helpful as I believe it’s past the statute of limitations and I can no longer open a claim. What’s my best option going forward? I obviously don’t have $6k to cough up nor do I want to have to pay anything out of pocket if i don’t need to. Any advice is appreciated!
