Can An Employer Force Employees To Pay The Difference In Prices Of Mistakenly Sold Items?

Location: Arizona

I work at a small business with only 4 other employees and the owner. The owner is very hands off with the buisness (employees trained themselves, owner not available to ask questions, owner does not monitor inventory/stock, etc). The inventory is also off more often than not just from previous employees not keeping track of sales.

The current employees have all accidentally sold something for a different price. Examples may be selling something priced $10 per pound for $10 flat, or selling a $55 product for $15 as inventory said there were 2 $15 products but only 1 available. The $15 and $55 products look identical to someone who's not trained to tell the difference. Any mistake or question for the owner gets the response of "ask ChatGPT" even though all employees have agreed that ChatGPT has given us wrong answers to questions regarding the store's products.

The owner has texted the entire staff saying that if things are to be sold wrong, the employee will be financially responsible for paying the difference. Even though we were never trained to be able to spot the difference between items. We have no identification training, inventory is wrong most of the time, and the owner/chatgpt is either not available when needed or giving wrong answers.

My question is: would it be wage theft if the owner made employees responsible for paying the difference? Would that be legal?

I always assumed that employees making mistakes and selling something priced higher for a lower price is just part of buisness- especially when employees have no formal training.

There will be a meeting about this tomorrow, and I just want to know my legal rights as an employee and not be scared into something that may be illegal.
