Can Anyone Help Me Understand How To Protect Our Family Moving Forward After My Husband Suffered Sudden Cardiac Arrest?
Location: Kansas
In 2023, my husband suffered sudden cardiac arrest. He was 37. After CPR and being shocked 6 times at our house, his heart restarted. He spent several weeks in a coma, has an ICD, and has had several issues since 2023. His issue is VTach (putting it simply).
Last May he started having episodes, and thankfully the ICD did its job, and shocking him saved his life. By August he has been shocked 7 times and after two week long stays in the hospital we were sent home and told there isn't anything else they could do. I asked for a referral to KU med in KC and they had him in for surgery by November. The surgery has helped more than we could have ever imagined given what doctors were saying in August.
Unfortunately, he was let go from his job for missing too much work and not meeting deadlines due to the health issues. He's now at a great job, but I don't know enough about disabilities and how to keep us protected from this issue moving forward. He was out of work from August until January after he recovered from his surgery.
He's the breadwinner of the family. He is pretty high up in his field, and until all this happened finances were great. When he was out of work he applied for disability. We were not sure if he would ever be able to go back to work, honestly. A year later, we are finally in the screening process, but he is doing well, back to work, makes too much money for any financial benefits.
My questions:
Should we continue with the disability process at this point? Is there any benefit to doing this other than financial assistance?
How do we protect his career moving forward so that if something happens he isn't immediately let go?
Is there an ADA registry he needs to register for, or anything we can do on our end?
I may not even be asking the right questions because this is so weird and I am just confused on where to go from here? We don't have the money to hire an attorney because of the financial burden this has all caused. I'm so lost and scared. We have 2 kids, 17 and 11. Help!!
