Can I Donate All His Things To Goodwill?

Location: Virginia, USA.

My fiance and I broke up back in July, we lived together for a year prior to that in the home that I own. He sold his house to move in with me, and moved all of his furniture and things in.

When we broke up, I hired a moving company to move all of his things into a storage unit. He did pay me back for this.

Well, the storage unit has been full and ready for his pickup since late July. After a brief stint in the fall of trying to make things work again, it is now assuredly over.

He keeps playing games about this unit. I keep asking him to set a time to meet at the storage unit (he now lives two hours away) so I can sign over the contract and he takes financial and physical responsibility of it. (Unfortunately, in person is the only way to do this, at this particular company — trust me. I checked. And checked. And even pulled some Karen moves to check again.) In the meantime, he Venmo’s me the full balance every month and I make the payment. We’ll make plans to switch the owner, and then weather will cause him to cancel. And then we’ll make plans, and then something will come up. Or he’ll try to make plans when he knows I’ll be out of town.

And now I get the sense he’s about to do it again.

So before I threaten him with this, I just want to check my legal standing.

I want to tell him he has 30 days to move his stuff out of MY unit. If he doesn’t, I’m getting a new lock, and I’m donating everything to Goodwill.

Would I be within my rights to do this, even though he’s paying for the unit through me? Obviously, after the 30 days I wouldn’t expect him to keep sending me payments.

One last note: I probably wouldn’t actually donate everything to Goodwill. I know which boxes contain things he’d probably rather have one day, so I’ll keep those at my house for when his sanity comes back.
