Can My Boss Force Us To Sign A Contract Saying We Won't Date People From Another Company?
Location: California
I work for a small contractor in the land development field (less than 10 total employees). When I was hired, I was told casually not to date guys at the job site by my boss and this had been casually but consistently brought up around work verbally by my boss, always with a casual tone. Without giving too much detail for privacy, a coworker got romantically involved with an employee of another contracted company for the job we're on and things have gotten a bit messy in their relationship apparently. This mess is solely personal and does not impact the work. My coworker told our boss what happened and our boss is now telling other coworkers that he is essentially firing her for breaking his trust and planning on drafting a contract for us all to sign saying we won't date other people on the job site, including employees of other companies, at the risk of being fired. Not that this really effects me anyways as I am happily taken but the principle of it feels like a massive overreach and I'm not comfortable with the precedent. Her being fired at all for violating a personal preference, not a company policy, feels illegal as well but I'm not personally involved in that. Any advice or input? Is this legal to demand that your employees not date the employees of another company?
