Can My Employer Force Me To Use My Personal Phone For Work Calls After Mine Was Stolen
So I work at a small logistics company in Ohio and about two weeks ago my work phone got stolen out of my car. I filed a police report and told my boss the next day. He said he'd look into getting a replacement but its been radio silence since then. Now hes saying I need to use my personal cell for client calls and dispatch coordination until further notice. I really dont want to do that because I dont want clients having my actual number and also my plan isnt unlimited so work calls would eat into my minutes.
I asked if the company would reimburse me for the extra usage or at least cover part of my bill and he said no because the phone wouldnt have been stolen if I had been more careful. The thing is I locked my car but the window got smashed so I dont see how thats on me. He also mentioned that using my personal phone is just part of being flexible and a team player which feels like hes trying to guilt me into it.
I looked at my employment paperwork and theres nothing in there about providing my own device. When I was hired they gave me the work phone specifically for this stuff. Is he allowed to just decide I have to use my own phone now without any compensation. And can he blame me for the theft even though it wasnt my fault someone broke in.
