Can My Lawyer Get Away With Overcharging Me?

Card image cap

Location: NH

Emailed back and forth with this lawyer regarding setting up a consult. My aunt and mom were briefly his clients in the past and he said he just had to confirm with them that it was OK for me to see him as well (potential conflict of interest). I ended up having a single one hour video call with him for advice and nothing else.

Just got a bill in the mail:

$85 for sending an email to my aunt asking if it was OK to speak to me

$85 for my back and forth with him via email to see if he could even help me in the first place

$85 for my mother calling his office and asking if he would help me before telling her to tell ME to email him….

$35 data charge for video call????

2 hours at $425 each for the actual consult because he had to “study my case” even though he came to the call extremely unprepared and spent half of it flipping through documents and getting familiar with the information which I actually had to correct him on a couple of times…

I never signed any agreement before having this meeting with him. He wanted me to but his secretary never sent it to me. We also never discussed price, however I knew his hourly rate since my aunt and mom have both gone to him before.

What can I do? Anything? Do I have to pay it? Can he sue me if I refuse? I’m happy to pay him for the hour he gave me but that is it.
