Coworkers Threw Away My Personal Belongings At Work Without Authorization. What Are My Legal Options?

I’m looking for some guidance on a workplace property issue in California.
While I was away from work on disability leave, two coworkers allegedly threw away my personal belongings without management authorization. They knew the belongings were mine and that I was still employed.
The items included clothing like a couple jackets and shoes, personal letters, handmade gifts, posters, stickers, and my original college diploma. Some items were reportedly salvaged by other coworkers, but others are potentially permanently lost.
Management was reportedly very upset when they learned what happened.
I’m considering filing a police report and potentially pursuing the individuals responsible through small claims court.
A few questions:
1. Could this potentially constitute theft, vandalism, or conversion under California law?
2. Would a police report be useful if I eventually pursue a small claims case?
3. How should I calculate damages for handmade and irreplaceable belongings?
4. Could the employer have separate liability?

I’m not looking to exaggerate the situation. I genuinely want to understand my legal options and how to preserve evidence. Location: California
