Deceased Ex Husband Storage Unit

Card image cap

Location: Jacksonville FL

Earlier this year my ex husband passed away. Natural causes. Long story short, I thought he skipped town and reached out to his family that morning after filing a missing persons report to ask if he was headed their way. How did I know he was "missing"? His job reached out to me stating he hadn't been to work in 3 days. We have 3 children together. Spoiler. He didn't skip town and unfortunately passed away in a parking lot.

LITERAL seconds after finding his body, my deceased ex husbands middle brother called me. I'm mid freak out and as I'm about to tell him that his older brother is dead, the middle brother starts freaking out on me, cussing, screaming, etc. I end the call, call the police and ignore his middle brother for a while because my head is SPINNING. My ex husbands middle brother is blowing my phone up, texting me the ugliest things until the following day. I'll admit, the following day the sympathetic side of me was gone and I started lashing back out but ended up calling the police and had them call him to tell him to leave me alone. And I haven't spoken to him since.

My exs middle brother would be the in charge of my deceased ex husbands estate and had already told me in the text messages that my children and I wouldn't get anything from my exs belongings. Unfortunately my Ex didn't have a will and all of the children we shared together are under 18. My ex had a storage unit that is now going to auction because the bill didn't get paid. My ex put me down as a "authorized user" and thats how I found out about it. I googled the "what if" I don't inform the estate about the storage unit and saw I could be sued for "damages" so I informed my exs family about it and they said they would pass the message along for me. But I was informed that most likely, they wouldn't be able to do anything because of money issues. I TRIED to give the storage unit the middle brothers information and the storage unit REFUSED to take it. Now for the question!!

NOW that the estate has been informed, IF they can't do anything about the bill and the unit goes to auction, could my ex husbands estate sue me for winning the auction? Part of me doesn't want to deal with any of this and the other part doesn't want my children to blame me in the future for not trying..
