Is There Any Way To Appeal A Civil Case Judgement 4 Months Later

Card image cap

Location: California

I have a civil case where after a lengthy trial, judgement was entered against me.

Problem is, I did not know there was a judgement. I was told by lawyer this was just a preliminary hearing and the actual court case would be decided at a hearing in May

After the initial hearing, my lawyer disappeared and stopped communicating with me so I hired a new lawyer and thats when I found out a judgement was already entered against me at the previous hearing. The new lawyer is telling me deadline to appeal was 2 months after the judgement and I no longer have any options, and that the hearing in May i thought was the court case was just for court to decide if either party will be sanctioned. Only thing he can do for me is to try and minimize any sanctions against me

What do I do? Is there really no options left for me?

Additional note: If its relevant, I was hospitalized for most of the case. Thats why I didnt know the case had turned into such a mess.
