Employer Is Trying To Switch Everyone's Worker Statuses From W2 To 1099

I work for a distribution company (can't really specify the product as it might reveal the company). Earlier this week (week of July 20th 2026) there was a notice put up on the door to my boss's office indicating there would be a shift for all employees to become independent contractors. There wasn't any attention raised to it like in most other situations, but I happened to notice it right as I was about to end my day.

Then on the 23rd, I was left with a packet that outlined the terms of the transition to 1099 employment. I read through everything and it's obviously very unfavorable, as it outlined the following:

1. A new vague pay system that also burdens the employees with responsibility over taxes

2. Major changes to the PTO system

3. Responsibility to employees for damage to work vehicles that could be tied back to us

4. Confidentiality clauses that basically say we can't make mention of the company anywhere and cannot talk to other vendors about our work

5. Company holds no liability for injury or death on the job

6. A legal hold harmless and non-competes related to the confidentiality clauses

7. Freedom to terminate without cause while limiting how employees can terminate the contract

I already don't intend to sign the contact and I anticipate losing my job to this issue. My question is if there's anything I can do to protect my coworkers who don't feel as strongly about this as I do, and is there any recourse for potentially being fired over this?
