Estranged Father Died And I Am Only Legal Next Of Kin - Washington State, Usa

My estranged father was found deceased in his apartment last Friday, Aug 28, and I am the only legal next of kin. He rented an apartment and lived there alone. My plan as of right now is to travel to where he lived to look through the apartment for any sentimental items. I will also pick a funeral home for cremation. My question is about what legal obligations I have. Am I required to empty his apartment if I go there? Do I have to pay for the unattended death cleanup? Can I review his finances and decide whether to make end-of-life changes? I believe he was receiving Social Security disability. I don't think he has a will, and I expect his outstanding debts exceed any assets that he has, so I don't necessarily want to go through all the trouble of paying things out if I won't receive any money in the end. I know that sounds really cold, but I am a resident physician and very busy, and I have not seen my father or received any real support from him in over 12 years.
Edit to add: Does anyone know if I would be able to get in to the apartment to remove some sentimental items without actually accepting responsibility for the entire contents of the apartment?
