Ex Signed A New Lease While We’re Both On Our Current Lease

My ex and I share an apartment because neither of us could afford to move out or break the lease.
My mother is moving to DFW, and offered to let me stay rent free until my lease was over- meaning ex would get the apartment all to himself + I would still be paying rent.
This situation was explained to him in its entirety. He took it upon himself to sign a new lease at a different apartment. He said he’ll send me $300/ month (our rent is 740 each) or we can “surrender the keys” before October (I spoke to my leasing office and they said this is not an option).
There’s no physical way I can afford this apartment on my own + finding someone to move in for 4 months (lease is up in January) is a really hard sell.
More than anything I’m furious he did this when I GAVE HIM THE PERFECT OUT.
How will this play out in small claims? Is it even worth it? I don’t feel like I have options and I’m quite worried about my financial situation.
I’ve talked to the leasing office about the situation, and they suggested small claims.
