Father Asking For Repayment Of Loans
Location: Arkansas, USA
Hello, this is a very complicated situation. My father has had a very on again- off again relationship (based on my father's emotion) with me, his only daughter. He is manipulative and is very spiteful. I need help in being guided in this situation.
We got into an argument in February 2026 due to some political/world view differences. He left my house very angry, and from then on did not speak to me. He asked my partner to remove our items from his storage unit under the disguise that he was moving storage units. He was not; he just wanted us to get our things out of the storage unit under that disguise so that he doesn't look like the bad guy. He created a fake document he showed my partner stating that the monthly payment was going up so he was changing units. We moved our items out without barely any contact from my father. His deadline came up that we had to move everything out of and we got into a one-sided argument from me to him about why he wouldn't take my calls, texts, etc. I had not spoken to him since March of 2026 until now.
Current day:
My father sent me an email stating for me to repay him loans starting from 2022. I asked him for burden of proof, this is what he sends me:
"I do not have access to the bank accounts prior to April 2024 for proof of completed transactions, but I do have screenshots of payment confirmations for the vendors listed. As a reminder, some of these were based on verbal agreements, such as the amount I paid for *partners* procedure. I asked you if you wanted to keep the debt for him separate or to lump it in with yours. You stated to leave it combined with what you already owed me. "
Based off this information, can he sue me for what he does not have proof of? What if the only proof he has is just proof of payment (just a screenshot of a receipt), but no proof we discussed anything? Some of what we discussed was purely verbal, and the rest is in text messages. Some of the charges he has accrued, he paid for them outright. It was not a loan, but he is still charging me. Technically, those were gifts, correct? If he cannot provide proof of anything before 2024, can he still sue me for that money? He is stating I owe him a little less than 2500 dollars, but I believe I do owe him less than half. Also, due to our relationship is there any way I can get a no contact order after this is settled? I do not wish to speak to him after this. I know this is not very eloquently put together, but I am not sure of how to proceed and what to do. I do not owe him everything he states I owe him, but I do understand I may have to pay him something. Any advice would help; I am lost as to where to begin. He is currently suing his ex-wife and an ex-gf, so I know if we do not come back with some agreement, he WILL sue me. This is just him trying to come to a settlement beforehand. But, I am nervous he will not like any of my suggestions due to his nature and will just take me to court.
