Father-in-law's Set Release Date From Prison Is Coming Soon, But They Said They Won't Release Him?

So, my father-in-law is in prison at the moment, has been since March. And since then, it has been an incredible struggle just staying afloat. He was set for release in early October, at which point we would finally be able to exhale. About an hour ago, someone in contact with him in our family notified us that he's staying in for six more months: "Because he has not been in long enough to learn his lesson." Mind, he has no other charges against him, and he hasn't had any poor behavior while in prison. His release date was already set. So my question is, is there any legal recourse for them to do this? Extend his prison sentence because they say he "hasn't been there long enough to learn his lesson"? At the rate things are going, we're unlikely to survive if he does stay another six months, and this feels illegal in some way, but I'm not studied in law, so any help or clarification of how to possibly fight this would be appreciated.
