Federal Background Check Question - Structuring
Location: Nevada
I am in the process of a federal background check. The recruitment team reached out regarding a financial transaction from 2025. I would like to know what is the best way to proceed in replying without cornering myself into a legal issue based on how I responded. I just found out about structuring and now I am trying to find advice on this matter. I was going to respond to the federal agency but as I did more research on how structuring gets reported, I decided to take a step back. I tried to reach out to local attorneys but it seems this is too unique of a question to get answered.
Context: Family moved out of the country and sold all of their belongings. Over the course of a few days, they gave me sums of money to hold onto and to send it to them once they were established in the new country. I opened a new account to separate the funds from mine to keep it organized. The total equaled 16,000. When I received the first amount which was 9,000, I opened the bank account and deposited. The next day, I received 7,000 and deposited a day after.
Day 1: Received 9,000. Opened bank account and deposited
Day 2: Received 7,000
Day 3: Deposited the 7,000. Totaling 16,000
This is the only time this has happened, so this is the only "pattern" im sure they are asking about. I do have statements that I transferred them money over time and now only $2000 remains.
I have no problem being truthful with my response because I did not have any intent of structuring, but I dont want this to spill over into an investigation based on how I respond.
