Former Employer Says I Owe Them 8 Months Of Health Insurance Premiums Because They Forgot To Remove Me
I left my old job about 8 months ago. Everything seemed normal when I left, final paycheck came through and I started a new job a few weeks later.
Last week my old employer emailed me saying they discovered I was never removed from their health insurance plan and they had apparently been paying the employer portion of my premium this entire time. They are now asking me to reimburse them a little over $3,800.
I had no idea I was still covered. I never received anything from them about continuing coverage and I have insurance through my current job. I did have two doctor appointments during that time but as far as I know my current insurance was billed.
They gave me 30 days to pay and said if I don't they may send it to collections. I really don't want to hand over almost $4k for an accounting mistake I didn't even know existed.
Can they actually make me responsible for premiums they voluntarily kept paying after my employment ended? And can something like this legitimately be sent to collections if I never agreed to repay it?
