Former Roommate Kept My Share Of Refunded Security Deposit. Is There Anything I Can Do?
Location: Washington State
I lived in an apartment with 4 people. One roommate, ‘Madeline’ was the “head of house” but all of us were on the lease. The total security deposit was $2,669 and we each paid about $667.
We all moved out in June 2025 before the lease was up. We were told by the apartment that as long as we moved out before the next month, there would be no lease break penalties or loss of deposit.
I waited several months and kept being told the deposit was “taking a while” or “idk if they’ll return it because we left early.” Yesterday I contacted the apartment myself and they confirmed that the deposit was refunded on July 14, 2025 to Madeline’s mailing address (since she was head of house). They also sent me a statement showing the refund was $2,418 and that all our names were on it.
This means each of us should have received about $604, but Madeline kept the entire refund and has not given anyone their share. She is now claiming she doesn’t know what happened to it, even though the apartment confirmed it was sent to her address.
What is the proper legal process in Washington to recover my share of this money? Is there anything worth being done in this situation? My family thinks I should ask her for my part and if she ignores me to move on and “cut my losses”
