General Contractor Died With Debt To Me, An Independent Contractor

Card image cap

Location: Ohio I was making decent money through a general contractor who would send me jobs painting rental flips for him. Unfortunately, he would go through spells of writing checks that bounced or he’d be really delayed in sending me checks. Everybody that worked for him was going through the same problems with getting paid, but he always (eventually) got things straightened out.

Well, this time, he left me hanging since October. I sent him multiple reminders to pay, and when he sent me another project to do, I declined and asked him to pay me what he owed first. He never responded to my texts after that.

I found out that he passed way a couple of weeks ago. The other independent contractors that were still working for him are still owed thousands of dollars each. I got out early.

I’ve been told that nobody is getting paid right now due to everything being in probate. We didn’t have a formal contract. I would send him texts with my hours and dates worked, along with receipts for supplies, photos of completed work, and total owed. So, it was very informal. What should I be doing to ensure I’m in line to get paid?
