Immigration Law Question

Location:
I recently am dealing with a major issue at the Canadian USA border.
I am a USA citizen and resident but still hold my PR in Canada to care for my kids after a divorce. I cross border daily back and forth.. keeping a PR is not the issue.. I cross enough and sleep over in Canada to care for me kids. the issue I am now running into is Canada border is telling me I HAVE to IMPORT MY AMERICA car to Canada or else I will forever be denied entry at the crossing IN MY car.
The issue is, I do not want to. I am a us state resident and I have every right to have my car. I hold a us state drivers license as well.
I want to keep my American car with my US plates, insurance and registration in my state of residence.
As my future plans are there (only needing Canada residency to care for kids atm) Are they incorrect and in the wrong to tell me to turn around at the border and go back to USA now? Denying me entry until I pay taxes, import fees etc even though I do not want to import? I used to have a Canada car, dl, insurance but after divorce decided to start to plant my feet back home in the US and one of the things I did was sell the car and get a new one..
