Landlord Gave Me Receipt For Rent Paid, But Now Says My Payment Was 100 Short (ny)

Location: Upstate New York

I paid my landlord's assistant rent for this month in cash (I've learned my lesson there and have made arrangements to pay directly through their LLC's bank) and was provided a receipt saying how much I paid. The receipt has written in the amount he charges for rent ($1025) but I also gave him $50 for a late fee, totalling $1075. After my landlord collected the rent from his assistant, the assistant texted me saying he counted it and it was $100 short. I informed both of them that I was given a receipt and they both insist it was written in error because she trusted that I gave her the correct amount and didn't count it herself. My last message received from them was simply "I suggest you pay the 100."

I want to push back and tell him to sue me about it and let a judge decide whose problem this is. But I am also concerned that, since our rental agreement is month-to-month, he'll just move to evict me. He owns or represents a significant portion of the local rental properties as well, so I find moving to be a daunting prospect.

Or I can just eat the hundred and move on with my life. It won't kill me but it's starting to turn to winter weather up here and I need to think about heating the house. I'm willing to swallow my pride but I am hesitant to set the precedent that I can be bullied by them.

I need advice on how to proceed and an outsider's perspective on the options available. Thanks in advance
