What Are My Rights To Property?

Card image cap

Location: Maryland

My (42F) ex-husband (45M) and I have been legally divorced since March 2026. In our divorce agreement (marital settlement), it states I get certain marital property while he gets remaining marital property.

A little context: I didn't want the divorce to begin with, so no lawyers were involved, as he felt it would make things "messy," and I wanted to do whatever he asked to make him happy because I loved him and wanted to do whatever i thought could make us reconcile.

I'm in the process of obtaining my owed marital property, but I have nonmarital property that I also want back, and he is refusing. There are things I brought into the relationship from my former home before we lived together, and before we were married. There is nothing in the divorce agreement stating I can't have those items back. I have proof of ownership of those items before we lived together.

I am thinking about contacting a lawyer next week anyway, since he also owes me a significant amount of $ that he didn't want to put in the divorce, but verbally agreed to pay back. He has acknowledged he owes me the money and agreed to start making payments this month, but I have yet to receive any payment.

I just want to know, before I contact and pay for a lawyer, that I have any grounds to file a case? Thanks in advance.
