Landlord Has Not Returned Deposit
Location: Pennsylvania/Massachusetts
My kid goes to college in Pennsylvania, we live in Massachusetts. This past winter, we signed a lease for him to stay in an off campus apt and paid two deposits (one Dec, one in Feb) for a total of about $1300. a few of the friends he signed on with ended up leaving the lease and he ended up not wanting to live with people he did not know as well, so he also left the lease this summer. the landlord confirmed that the other rented replaced him (and paid his own deposits) and that my son was off the lease on 31 July and asked for our address to send the check to refund the total deposit. I emailed it back the same day. Two weeks later, I emailed to check in about the check. They replied two weeks later that they sent the check on August 4th and that they would check in with their accountant to see if the check had been deposited. I sent an email back thanking them for looking into it the same day. Two weeks later, they had not reported anything back, so I emailed to check in. It's not been two weeks with no reply. Any advice about what my next steps should be? A certified letter outlining the above and requesting an electronic transfer of the funds? I have tried calling multiple times and it seems like they have their office line set up to go straight to voicemail. Thank you in advance!
