Left A Note After My Car Rolled Into A Parked Car, Officer Classified It As Hit And Run. What Actually Happens Next?

Location: Pennsylvania.

Yesterday I was sitting in my parked car on a steep hilly street. My foot came off the brake and it rolled forward into a parked, unoccupied vehicle. Nobody was in the other car and nobody was injured. Damage is to their left rear quarter and bumper with some dents, but nothing major; mine has minor front right damage.

I wrote a note with my full name and phone number, put it in their car door crack, and photographed the note. Also took photos and videos of both of our cars right when it happened. I had a passenger with me who witnessed all of it. I also filed a claim with my own insurer that same day, as soon as I got home before anyone contacted me.

Later, police showed up. The officer said the note apparently wasn’t found and that leaving name and phone alone isn’t enough under PA law, that I also needed to leave my address and notify police, and that this can be a third-degree misdemeanor. He said he thought I’d be fine and would try to reduce it. He gave me an information exchange slip with the “hit and run” box checked, but no citation and no court date.

The other vehicle’s owner texted me afterward, thanked me for leaving the note (so I guess they found it??) and said she’d go through insurance. She’s been completely cooperative. I am cooperating as well and providing all information needed.

Will this really likely be a misdemeanor charge? Is there a possibility nothing is filed and the other car owner and I just go through insurance? Thank you.
