Location: Illinois Contractor Dispute (tmi, But Better To Have Too Much Info, We Presumed)
Location: Illinois
In the summer of 2024, we hired a small concrete contractor (4-5 trucks, 12+ employees) to cover the deck and repair and cover the front porch. We had an estimate and signed off on it.
Two years later, the porch had cracked and crumbled (about 10 ft across). The deck had about 6x1 feet peel up and crack badly
We called the same company(the owner, actually), played phone tag, and he came over eventually. He said, “I’ll send a couple of guys in about 6 weeks on Sept X) to fix this.” Nothing in writing, no cost mentioned. They (no owner or mgmnt) came a few days after they were scheduled (no notice, no contact at all. I texted the owner to verify the appointment a week early and the day of. No reply. No-show. We woke up 2 days later with people drilling the porch. They were working on and off for about 5 days. No contact with us, never a question, never said they were done. The patches don’t match the 2-year-old work, but we were happy to get it done finally.
A week later, we received an invoice for $3000. We hadn’t signed anything and no price was stated. We had presumed it was covered as repairs to his own 2-year-old work.
We spoke to them today, and they pushed back, saying we still owe the money and that they had told us this may happen.” The porch was 4-5k then, and now, 2 years later, it's about 2k to fix that part. Can we do anything besides just paying the bill?
