My Brother Lied About My Mental State After He Attacked Me, And I Was Given An Ultimatum Of Both Of Us Being Arrested, Or Myself Being Put Under A Psychiatric Hold, Can They Do That?

Long story short, my brother was off his meds and attacked me one night in my room. I called the police, said I was attacked, gave them the details, and the police came. My brother spun some story about how I was mentally ill, and having a mental breakdown and I was framing him for my attack on him, or some other such bullshit. So the officer came to me and said “here’s what’s gonna happen, either both of you are gonna be arrested and need to pay bail to be released, or you will be put under psychiatric hold.” Specifically me, not him for the latter choice.
Long story short I went under psychiatric hold because we didn’t have money to waste on bail for a crime I didn’t commit. Without going into the further legal details that happened afterwards, was this a thing they could do? Mandating a mental hold is one thing, but giving someone an ultimatum of being arrested for something they didn’t do, and a psychological evaluation at a hospital smells kinda off.
