My Girlfriends Car Was Chopped

I'm still trying to fit all the pieces together on this one, but this is what I understand of the situation.

About three months ago my girlfriend hired a guy to do some work on her vehicle, just some exhaust stuff from what I'm told. During this time her then boyfriend was diagnosed with cancer and died, then unfortunately her father died as well.

Obviously she was a bit busy and didn't check up on the vehicle much, but when she did the guy said he had lost the key, he was going to put a new ignition in it. He was giving her the run around as far as I could tell.

Later on when she tried to contact him he basically just ghosted her, stopped answering calls and text messages.

When we got together after a few weeks I said lets run over and see what's going on with your car. When we got there it was in the backyard of his fathers house, completely torn apart.

Doors missing, all the panels gone, the roof and the front end were chopped off, the back and front windshields smashed and the engine sitting on a cherry picker. He left the VIN on it for some reason and I confirmed and called the police to file a report.

I'm not sure what we should do now in this situation, she doesn't have any records we can find for him agreeing to do mechanical work to this vehicle. Either way it was titled and registered in her name and she certainly didn't sell it or agree to have it chopped.

Location: Michigan, Raisin Township police answered the call and its a 2007 Chevy Impala.

I'd really appreciate some advice cause I have no clue how to handle this asides street stuff and that's not how to handle these things these days.

EDIT: From photos I've seen of the vehicle before being chopped up it was in great condition even though it had heavy mileage on it. No rust, dents, or anything like that.
