My Now-ex Kicked Me Out Of Our Apartment, And Is Now Refusing To Take My Name Off Of The Lease.

Hello, I moved in with my now-ex boyfriend at the beginning of December 2025. I was an additional name on the lease, he signed the lease initially on his own. I am fairly certain I am a co-tenant, and not just an occupant. I never helped pay rent, despite my offers to.

This last Thursday, after consistent arguments and him accusing me of cheating, promising he’d change, then nothing would change, he finally decided to go through my journals and my phone (I was not unfaithful to him, but I vented a lot about him), he decided I was absolutely cheating on him and kicked me out.

I went to the leasing office and asked to get my name off of the lease because he kicked me out and they said their hands are tied unless he gives them permission.

Flash forward, I’m already on another lease of my own and moved out (I moved out within 2 days), and I went with my mom to return the key to the leasing office and for him to get my name off. The leasing office had to prepare the new lease, though, and it wasn’t going to be ready until today (3/6/2026). This entire situation has caused me immense emotional stress.

Well, in between Tuesday (3/3/2026) and today, he has said he will not sign to remove me unless I do things he asks of me. The first was returning a necklace I did not intentionally take, and the second was providing screenshots of a private conversation I had that he found out about. I did find and return the necklace to the leasing office the day he said it was missing.

I have since been blocked, and he has not removed me from the lease.

I am absolutely terrified of him, and I am terrified that he will ruin my credit. I know he wants to file for bankruptcy, and in any regard I just want out and to cut ties so that I can move on and start healing. I don’t know what to do anymore. I don’t want to press charges with the police because I’m not even sure it’ll go anywhere, although I do have all of the texts me and him have exchanged as well as messages he and my mother exchanged since I blocked his phone number and all social media.

I am wondering what I can do here, he has never been physical with me but he has been verbally and emotionally abusive, as well as incredibly manipulative.
