Fired after workload-related weight documentation issues—what should I do to protect my rights?

I worked for the same residential care employer for about eight years. It was my first job after finishing my medical assistant program. I was recently fired after my employer raised concerns about resident weight records and documentation.

Another MA entered some weights while I was away. When I returned, I checked and reconciled the entries before adding more because I was trying to avoid duplicate records. That took time, along with provider days, stocking and ordering supplies, helping with treatments, and resident care. I suggested to management I needed a 10-hour day to get everything done, it was too much to do in an 8 hour shift. Some entries weren’t completed in the electronic record as quickly as expected, but I did not intentionally falsify records or refuse to do my work. I had asked for help with the workflow and had recently been put on a final warning.

I had just returned from approved time off when I was fired. I’m preparing for an Illinois unemployment fact-finding interview, but I’m also trying to understand the employment side of this.

What records should I request or preserve, and should I speak with an Illinois employment attorney about whether the circumstances of my termination raise any legal issues? I want to be careful to keep this factual and protect any confidential resident information.
