Next Steps For Estranged Children?

Card image cap

Location: Arizona and Illinois

Hoping to get advice on what steps my husband and SIL should take. Any advice is appreciated. Husband and his sister will of course be making any calls or decisions. I am writing this on their behalf.

My FIL passed away in Feb. Left everything to his ex wife, my MIL. MIL passed since. They moved to AZ before they passed. We all live in IL otherwise.

We have reason to believe she had a trust, but we do not know for sure. The issue is husband and SIL were both essentially estranged from their parents, so we have no documents or information about which lawyer MIL may have used, or who the trustee is. We know the lawyer FIL used from IL.

I believe we need to call FILs lawyer (on the chance MIL used his IL lawyer) and then call a probate lawyer in AZ to fact find for us. Is this the best course of action? Are there other or additional steps we should take? If husband and SIL are not beneficiaries, is there a way for them to get a copy of the trust docs? Any guidance or additional advice is appreciated.
